In this program second graders are introduced to insect structure and life cycle at the Nature Center. In the Center's classrooms and laboratory they observe an operating bee hive and examination of insect specimens, nests, and egg cases. They also participate in a series of activities featuring anatomy, the process of metamorphosis, and learn about both harmful and beneficial insects. Then the students hike out to investigate insects in different habitats found at Fair Hill. They use sweep nets to collect specimens in the field, catch and observe aquatic insects in streams, and search under logs and through the litter layer in the forest for insects such as the bark beetle. Join a group of second graders as they "get buggy" at Fair Hill Nature Center!
| During the short introduction, students answer the question, "What makes an insect an insect?" By helping to create an imaginary insect, they review basic insect body parts and their functions. |
