Grade 5

Food and Nutrition

Concepts: From background Page 2

1. Foods contain nutrients that affect the health of an organism.

2. Nutrition is a process that delivers the essential nutrients.

3. Nutrients are building blocks for growth and energy provides.

4. Most of the energy that fuels life on the earth comes from the sun.

5. Autotrophs like green plants capture energy from the sun and produce their own food.

6. Heterotrophs can't make their own food and obtain energy from autotrophs.

7. Students will study nutrition in Fair Hill's aquatic wetland by constructing an energy (or food) pyramid at our Freshwater marsh and stream. This discovery will include microscopic examination of plankton and collections of heterotrophs in a stream.
