Fair Hill Nature Center's Outdoor School

Grade 3

"Forestree", Life Science - Structures of Life

Concepts from Foss:

1. A seed is an organism

2. Plants require nutrients.

3. The life cycle is the process of a seed growing into a mature plant, which in turn produces seeds.

On a hike through the woods of Fair Hill students will observe trees and other plants in different stages of development and discuss the function of each part of the tree. They will use an identification key to recognize trees by their leaves, seeds, and bark. The hike will also include an activity to discover what happened to last year's leaves.

Stations will reinforce concepts taught during the hike such as 1) a tree growth ring observation 2) a relay race to reinforce leaf and seed identification 3)"Every tree for itself" a game about competition in the forest for basic needs.
