Grade 2

"A Bugs Life", Life Science - Insects

Concepts:

1. Insects have structure

2. Life cycles of insects include complete and incomplete metamorphosis.

3. Different insects have different habitat requirements.

Students are introduced to insect structure and life cycle through observation of an ant farm, examination of insect specimens, nests and egg cases. Students participate in a series of games and activities featuring metamorphosis, scent trails and mouthpart structure.

On a hike, students will use sweep nets to collect specimens in the field, discover aquatic insects in small tributaries, and observe insects such as the bark beetle in the forest. Students will experience the diversity of insects and their habitats native to Cecil County.
