Spring 2002 Calendar of Events

 The Fair Hill Nature Center wants to extend a warm welcome to you at any time. we're working on several new exhibits over the next few months that will enable you to enjoy the Center, even if the doors are locked!

Bluebirds and Marvelous Maples

Saturday, March 2, 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Bluebird program: Learn nest box construction; predator control; importance of monitoring; food; habitat and much more. Free nest box plans and other literature for all who attend.

 


Marvelous Maples

Saturday, March 2, 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Maple Sugaring: Sugar from a tree? How can that be? Join us and find out! Learn what trees to tap; how to tap a tree; boiling the sap down and then get a taste of maple syrup.

S.W.A.T. Road Cleanup

Saturday, March 23, 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Do your part to help clean up our roadsides by joining Nature Center staff and board members for its quarterly trash pickup day along our adopted highway, a 2 mile section of Rt. 273. We will meet at Wesley's parking lot at 8 a.m. All materials provided by the Nature Center. Must be 12 years or older.


Trails Day

Saturday, March 23, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Come participate in the Fair Hill Nature Center Trails Day. Help us prepare our walking, hiking, and nature trails and grounds in preparation for the spring.


Frog Frenzy

Friday, April 5, 6:30 p.m.

Come to the Fair Hill Nature and take a short hike to hear the froggy chorus at dusk. Enjoy a campfire and refreshments afterwards.


Wildflower Walk

Saturday, April 13, 10:00 a.m.

Enjoy a guided walk through beautiful meadows and woods at Fair Hill to identify spring wildflowers.


Backyard Conservation Workshop

Wednesday, April 17, 7:00 p.m.

Sponsored by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Learn what you can do in your "own backyard" to help preserve our environment. Refreshments provided.

Fair Hill SpringFest

Saturday, May 11, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Cecil County Fairgrounds

This is a joint fundraising effort with Upper Bay Counseling and Support Services

Potential sponsor? Be recognized by your regional neighbors as a supporter of nature and the environment. Sponsorship opportunities range from Platinum $2000 to the Bronze $100.

Come join the hikers and bikers.

Gardening For Wildlife

Wednesday, May 15, 7:00 p.m.

Learn how to attact wildlife you your piece of the planet, while surviving the onslaught of deer. Presented by Carol Krawczyk Landscape Architect in the Plant and Soil Sciences Department at the University of Delaware. Refreshments provided.


Fair Hill Nature Center Home School Day

Wednesday, May 29, 12:30 - 2:30.
Rain date- Wednesday June 5, 12:30 -2:30

Ages 5-7 "Critters, Critters, Critters" - Learn animal groups and their characteristics -hike to observe signs of animals.

Ages 9 - 12 "Ecochains" - Become a local organism and get a "personal" look at how plants and animals found in three different habitats depend on each other for survival.


Butterfly Gardening

Saturday, June 8, 10:00 a.m.

Want to attract butterflies to your garden? Learn more about these beautiful insects, their life cycle, and what they need to flourish in your yard. Presented by entomologist Joe Tropp.

BEEcause We're Bees

Wednesday, June 12, 7:00 p.m.

Come see our observation beehive and learn all about bees and beekeeping. Beekeepers Laura and Jen Linton demonstrate their beekeeping equipment and describe the world of the honey bee. The Linton's maintain the Nature Center hive that was donated this year by the County Thyme Garden Club.

Refreshments will feature recipes using honey.
